Different Kinds of Bowls Used in the Cooking Process



If we want to get good results, it is important that we invest in high quality kitchen products. There are different tools and containers that we can use and bowls are among them. Bowls are usable with their different styles, designs, functions and decorations. They can be made from glass, metal, plastics, ceramic and many others. Plastic bowls are often the most favourite choices due to a number of reasons. They can be cleaned easily and some of them can be used to reheat food in the microwave. They won’t shatter like glass when accidentally dropped and generally quite durable against typical daily abuse. However, plastic bowls may scratch and scar relatively easily. It means that plastic bowl tend to have retention of odors and flavours of earlier food, which also mean that bacteria will multiply within those cracks. Food coloring will stain plastic bowl quite easily and it’s reasonable to regularly replace your plastic bowls.

Glass bowls are also highly functional in the kitchen, both the colored and clear variants. If you are concerned about the design and style while cooking, it is a good idea to choose the colored bowls for your cooking process. However, clear bowls should be acceptable and as functional for any cooking process. Glass bowls are usually made from pyrex and they should be able to withstand high temperature or very hot food. However, they still can’t stand direct exposure to fire. They can’t be scratched easily, are easy to clean, are microwavable and won’t retain the odor of earlier foods. It means that bacteria will have a harder time multiplying on the glass surface, especially if it’s clean and dry. The downside is that glass bowls are relatively heavy and they will definitely shatter when dropped accidentally.

Ceramic bowl or china can also be used for cooking process. Before using them, make sure that you choose those that are appropriate for cooking process. It means that the glaze is intact, so the food won’t penetrate into the ceramic, causing bacteria to proliferate. Just like glass bowls, ceramic can also shatter easily. However, with a little bump, ceramic will chip more easily that glass bowls, exposing the inner ceramic part. The glaze may not be appropriate for microwave and dishwasher, depending on the manufacturer of the ceramic bowls. In general, ceramic bowls should be used only for limited preparation tasks, while mostly should be used as kitchen decoration and serving pieces.

Metal bowls are also highly functional in the kitchen and they are reasonably sturdy. When accidentally dropped, they won’t shatter and we may only get a harmless dent. Even if they can be scratched by forks and knives, metal bowls won’t absorb the odor and taste of earlier foods. Metal bowls also conduct heat very easily and retain heat longer. Choose stainless steel, so the food won’t get the metallic taste due to direct contact with bare metal surface. Also be aware that steel will react with strong vinegar, which may ruin the taste of the food.
