When you smile and speak, you understandably want others to see beautiful, white teeth. You want your overall impression on them to be positive. However, yellowing teeth and general discoloration are common, and these problems can affect everyone. Discoloration is associated with smoking, poor hygiene and drinking various dark-colored beverages. It is also caused by aging, genetics and other factors outside of your control. The good news is that there are several at-home teeth whitening hacks that you can try.

Baking Soda

The use of baking soda to whiten teeth is perhaps the most common at-home method. One reason for its popularity is the fact that many people have baking soda on-hand in their kitchens. To use baking soda, you can simply dab your toothbrush in baking soda before brushing. Because baking soda is abrasive and can cause gum irritation, this process should only be repeated a few times weekly.

Activated Charcoal Powder

Activated charcoal powder is also proven to whiten teeth. In fact, when this product is used regularly, you may notice your teeth are up to eight shades brighter than they once were. In addition to addressing general yellowing, it can also remove stains. To use activated charcoal powder, brush your teeth with the substance several times each week.

Hydrogen Peroxide

You could also swish with a hydrogen peroxide solution to kill bacteria and whiten teeth. This process can be repeated several times each week as well, but be aware that the substance should not be swallowed. In addition, hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation in some people. An alternative is to use a special toothpaste that includes hydrogen peroxide in the formula.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has a high concentration of acetic acid. This substance is known to kill bacteria and to whiten teeth. As is the case with some other substances, it can erode enamel over time. Therefore, you should dilute it with water before swishing it in your mouth. In addition, rinse with tap water after swishing with apple cider vinegar so that none of the substance remains on your teeth. Professional teeth whitening is another option to consider. However, professional treatments are expensive and require you to visit the dentist multiple times within a short period of time for the best results. Because of this, they are relatively inconvenient for most people. Before going through the hassle and expense, it makes sense to try some of these at-home teeth whitening hacks.
