We’re all dreaming about the moment when we’ll be able to freely travel again. After a year of not being able to go anywhere, we are itching to get out of our houses, or minds are planning new adventures and destinations to visit in 2021

If you are planning a road trip for this year, there are some things that you need to think about. The popularity of road trips has increased this past year and for an obvious reason. Like many things, international travel was affected by the Covid19, and out of fear of catching or spreading the disease, people turned to low-key traveling such as road trips.

We still don’t know how the situation will progress this year, but we’re hoping that traveling will be possible. If you’re still wary of the airports or cruises, maybe road trips are a good option for you.

Check out all the things you need to think about before hitting the road.

Have a plan for your road trip

Having some sort of plan is always a good idea. Yes, road trips are all about unexpected turns and stops, but going blind and without any sort of real destination is never recommended. Preparation is the key, especially in these times of uncertainty that we live in.

You can easily plan your road trip route. If you’re planning on staying in hotels or motels, make sure they are working. Also, we still aren’t out of the woods when it comes to this virus, so it would be a great idea to see if all states or countries are open or if you need proof of a negative Covid19 test.

Plan your stops ahead of the time, and keep in mind that certain public restrooms may still be closed due to the pandemic. Also, if you’re planning to take meal breaks, the best solution is to pick your food at a drive-through, order a take-out or eat out in the open.

Budget

Create a road trip budget because overspending can be very easy. Before creating a budget you’ll need to have the above-mentioned road trip plan. When you have a solid plan, it will be easier to create a budget

The budget usually consists of gas, personal car costs or rental car costs, accommodation, food, and drink, unexpected circumstances, planned and unplanned activities. You probably already know the total budget for your trip and to stick strictly to it without overstepping, you’ll need to prioritize.

Maybe, staying in a hotel is way too expensive and a better idea would be to find a campsite and sleep in a tent or your car.

Apart from that, you must always have an emergency budget for unforeseen circumstances. You never really know what may happen on the road trips, so an emergency budget is a must.

Prepare your vehicle for the road

This step is highly important when you’re planning a road trip. Having your car break down while you’re on the road trip is the worst possible thing that could happen to you. So, to avoid potential vehicle malfunctions, the best solution is to visit a mechanic.

The mechanic will check the car, change anything that needs to be changed, and simply get your car road-ready.

Apart from a car check, you should also clean your vehicle. You’ll be spending most of your time in a car and no one wants to go road tripping in a dirty vehicle. So, take your car somewhere where they offer the best car washing, cleaning, and detailing services. This way you’ll be sure that your car is far cleaner than you would have been able to clean it.

Necessary travel documentation

Apart from passports, ID cards, driver’s license, car insurance, and registration, this year you may be required to take additional travel documentation. Regardless of whether you’re going on a domestic or international road trip, it would be best to have a negative Covid19 test with you.

Also, make sure you check official government websites of countries you’re intending to visit to make sure you have all the necessary documentation with you. If you’re doing the domestic road trip, different states or provinces even municipalities have different regulations, so it would be a good idea to be familiar with them as well.

All necessary things

Stocking up on food, drinks, and snacks is a given when it comes to road trips. Apart from that, you’ll need extra equipment such as a first aid kit, tents, sleeping bags, portable stoves, flashlights, and toilet paper is also very necessary.

However, nowadays, you’ll need some extra supplies. Packing enough hand sanitizers, disposable gloves, disinfecting wet wipes, disposable tissues, and plastic bags, as well as face masks is an absolute must. You can never be too safe these days.

We still don’t know what 2021 has in store for us. We can only hope that it will be better than the past year, and that will be able to travel freely. However, we still need to be careful and to keep as safe as possible during our travels.
